வருடம் 1975. லால்குடியும் அவரின் மனைவியும் காஞ்சி மகா பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க, தேனம்பாக்கம் கிராமத்துக்குப் போகிறார்கள். அங்கு சோகமான, வருத்தம் கலந்த சூழல் நிலவுகிறது. மடத்துச் சிப்பந்திகளில் ஒருவரின் நடவடிக்கையால் அதிருப்தி அடைந்த பெரியவர், அறை ஒன்றில் தன்னை அடைத்துக்கொண்டு காஷ்ட மௌனத்தில் இருந்தார். ஆகாரம், தண்ணீர் கிடையாது. எதற்காகவும் யாரிடமும் பேசாமல் இருந்தார்.
வேறு வழியின்றி, பரமாச்சார்யரைத் தரிசிக்க வேண்டும் என்கிற தனது ஆவலை அடக்கிக்கொண்டார் லால்குடி. இருப்பினும், புறப்படும்முன், பாடல்கள் சிலவற்றை அந்த மகானுக்குச் சமர்ப்பிக்கத் தீர்மானித்தார்.
காஞ்சிப் பெரியவருக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தமான சாமா ராகப் பாடலுடன் தொடங்கினார். பின்னர், ஆபோகி ராகத்தில், ‘சபாபதிக்கு வேறு தெய்வம் சமானம் ஆகுமா?‘ பாடலை வாசிக்க ஆரம்பித்தார். ‘கிருபாநிதி இவரைப் போல‘ வரியை பல்வேறு சங்கதிகளுடன் லால்குடி மெய்மறந்து இசைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்க, பெரியவர் தங்கியிருந்த அறையின் ஜன்னல் கதவு திறந்து கொண்டது. பாடல் முடிவுக்கு வரும் வேளையில், அறைக் கதவும் திறந்தது. கையைத் தூக்கி வாழ்த்தியபடியே ஆச்சார்ய சுவாமிகள் வெளியே நடந்து வந்தார்.
லால்குடியும் அருகில் இருந்த மற்றவர்களும் சிலிர்த்துப் போனார்கள்.
The year was 1975. Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman and his wife went to Thenambakkam to have darshan of Kanchi Mahaperiyava. There was sadness in the air at that place that day. Reason being, Periyava was dissatisfied with the actions of a kainkarya person and hence decided to confine Himself in one of the rooms and was in Kashta Mounam. No water or bhiksha for Him. He did not interact with anybody.
Lalgudi started off with a song in Syama raga, which was one of His favourite! Later he started to play on the violin ‘Sabapathikku veru Deivam samanam aguma’ (can any God compare with Lord Sabapathi (Nataraja) of Chidambaram?)
While he was playing the line ‘krupanidhi ivarai pola’ (The Compassionate One like Him) in engrossed manner, in different types of sangathi ie singing the same line in many different ways, the window of the room in which Swamigal was present got opened!
As the song was drawing to a close, the door also got opened!
Swamigal came out of the room with His Hand raised in blessings!

April 22nd is the mukthi day of violin maestro Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman!
In the picture he is seen playing the violin in His presence at Surutappalli on Dec 1, 1971. Sitting so close. What blessings.
Shri Rajah Iyer says: Lalgudi wanted to release a record, Veena, Venu Gana, with Ramani on flute and Veena Pichumani Aiyer. He wanted to get Periyava’s Blessings before the release. Periyava asked him to play those pieces. One can see the entire troupe here!
